We are studying the regulation of the photosynthetic electron transport chain and the relative importance of the different electron sinks in unicellular and filamentous cyanobacteria, and in green algae. Special attention is given to the specific properties of the electron-transport pathways of heterocysts, which are specialized N2—fixing cells of filamentous cyanobacteria. We are also interested in H2 metabolism and lipid-based biofuel production from both cyanobacteria and green algae. In order to improve the economic and energetic efficiency of photosynthetic biofuel production platforms, we are evaluating the growth of photoautotrophs on wastewater and are testing the feasibility of integrated wastewater treatment and biodiesel production on pilot scale.
